I can't hear the phone ringing when calling from my mac using Facetime Voice call

I have a brand new mac mini (Running mac os 14.6.1) and brand new iphone 15 (running ios 17.5.1) Calling from the mac through Facetime-Voice works great. The only issue is when I press the call button I usually don't hear anything until the other side answers the phone call. Sometimes I hear it ringing before the other side answers, bit most times it's just quite until the other side answers my call. Is there a setting I can check? I've done just about everything I can think of.
