I backed up my phone as I got a new storage plan so I was finally able to do so. It appears to have completely deleted some of my photos from last year even though I gave no such instructions plus i can’t find them in iCloud.

is totally different than syncing to icloud Set up and use iCloud Photos - Apple Support
