Need to set an air tag to my phone I got from Amazon it’s asking to to take rest id off old phone I don’t no it. Need to reset air tag don’t have old phone’s

Are you using the latest update?
Is your new phone signed in with a different Apple ID then do new phone?
If so, you can sign into the old Apple ID on the new phone and delete it from find my.
If you do not want to sign out you can also do it on this Apple website
That AirTag is used and will never work for you as long as it’s associated with that “other” AppleID.
Return it for a refund.
