Can’t update apps on child’s phone

Every time I try to press update I just get a spin with no download says it’s downloading. Then says verify Apple ID in settings but this can’t be done because the child’s name is greyed out because I have control on my phone as the parent. Same for him downloading shared purchases that I already have I’m trapped in a loop.
