Per chance do you have two factor authentication (2FA) enabled on your Google user account? If so, in order to access Gmail from the Apple Mail app, Google requires that you generate an app-password. You would then use that password, instead of your normal Google one when you set up the Gmail account in Apple Mail.
However, this may change in the near future. In theory, the Apple Mail app should meet Google's security standards. If you have already set up a Gmail account in Apple Mail. Delete it, and then, set it up again making sure you select the Google option for the account type.

I tried to remedy this all day today and what finally worked was installing the iOS 17.6.1 update on my phone.
Can you explain where to find this, please? I am getting this on my iPad and iPhone. It seems to be a common problem following Google Mail outages yesterday. I get the same message when trying to send with one of my three email accounts using Apple Mail. I downloaded Gmail app on the same device and that is working fine.
This is definitely a Google issue. Both the newer iPhones / iPads already have very up-to-date security for their respective Apple Mail apps.
First, I would ask if anything was done or changed prior to the problem occurring? Us your browser to directly access the email server and verify that your ID and password is accepted there. If so, then you will need to open Mail's Preferences and carefully reenter the identification data there.
I’m having the same problem. And no, nothing has changed.
I restarted the phone. I deleted the account and added again. It’s still not letting me send mail.
