Why are my iTunes songs grayed out

I have so many grayed out songs which won't play. These are all songs I loaded onto my iTunes years ago and I thought by joining Apple Music they might show up like the others. I was wrong. Still won't update. Any ideas...I am ready to try another platform to be able to play. I still have the cd's but don't want to have to load all that music and start over.
