Messages are not syncing consistently between iOS and MacBook

iPhone 12 (iOS 17.5.1)

16" 2019 MacBook Pro (macOS Sonoma 14.5)

I have my phone set up to sync messages to my MacBook. But I've noticed lately (past couple of months) that I'll see a notification on my phone, but Messages on my MacBook shows nothing.

I often have to go into the phone's settings and hit "Sync Now" under the Messages setting in the iCloud settings. Then I have to go to Messages -> Settings -> iMessage and hit "Sync Now" on the MacBook. At that point, it syncs.

But this is something that I have to do on an almost daily basis.

Obviously both the phone and laptop are set up correctly, otherwise hitting the "Sync Now" buttons on either device wouldn't work.

Is there anything that I can do to get the two to sync consistently?

MacBook Pro (2017 – 2020)
