How to batch convert webp to jpg on Mac?

I recently downloaded dozens of images from web and discovered they are all in WEBP format. For my work, I need to convert these images into JPG format. I am looking for an easy and efficient way to convert webp to jpg on my Mac.

Could someone recommend a simple and reliable method or tool that works well on macOS for converting WEBP images to JPG? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I am on a M2 MacBook Pro with macOS Sonoma 14.5.

Apple's command line sips utility can batch convert .webp to jpg images.

/usr/bin/sips -s format jpeg -s formatOptions 100 --out 1.jpg 1.webp

See the Use Sips to quickly, easily -- and freely -- convert image files

And substitute what I have shown in the example one-liner in that article.

Online webp to jpg conversion tools are a good choice. Websites like Zamzar and Convertio can convert WEBP to JPG for free. It's easy to use. Just upload the file, select the output format, and then download the converted file. However, they also have some disadvantages:

  1. Upload and download speed: If the network speed is slow, uploading and downloading files will take a long time, especially if you need to convert a lot of pictures.
  2. Privacy issues: Uploading files to third-party websites may have privacy and security risks, especially when it comes to sensitive or private content.
  3. File size limit: Some online tools have an upper limit on the size of a single file. If the image is too large, it may not be uploaded or converted.

In general, online conversion tools are suitable for occasional use, especially when no other tools are available, but if you need to convert a large number of files frequently, you may encounter the above problems.

Search for Automator in Spotlight and open it. Choose "Workflow" as the type of document.

In the left pane, search for "Get Specified Finder Items" and drag it to the workflow area. Click "Add..." and select the WEBP files.

Search for "Change Type of Images" and drag it below the previous action. Choose "JPEG" from the dropdown menu.

Click the "Run" button at the top right to batch convert webp to jpg on Mac.

Using an online converter to batch convert WEBP to JPG on a Mac is straightforward and convenient. Simply visit a reliable online converter website like Convertio or OnlineConvert, and upload all the WEBP files you want to convert. These platforms usually allow you to drag and drop files directly from your Mac or select them using a file picker. Once uploaded, select JPG as the output format and initiate the conversion process. After the conversion is complete, you can download the JPG files, usually as a compressed zip file for easy access.

However, there are some cons to using online converters for webp to jpg conversions. Uploading large batches of files can be time-consuming, especially if you have a slow internet connection. Additionally, there might be concerns about privacy and data security since your files are uploaded to an external server. Many online converters also have file size limits or may restrict the number of files you can convert at once without a subscription.

Using an online converter to batch convert WEBP to JPG on a Mac can definitely be super convenient, but there are some downsides that can get a bit annoying. I've tried it a few times, and while it seems easy, but the uploading process can be a real drag, especially if you’ve got a ton of files or they’re pretty large. If your internet connection isn’t the fastest, you’ll find yourself sitting there waiting—sometimes for ages! I remember once trying to upload a whole bunch of images while my internet was acting up, and it felt like I was watching paint dry. Not fun!

The online converters can definitely do the job, the slow uploading speeds, privacy concerns, file limits, and potential quality issues are some pretty big drawbacks. If you find yourself converting webp to jpg on Mac often, you might want to think about downloading a dedicated app that works locally on your Mac. Trust me, it can save you a lot of hassle in the long run!

I have encountered this problem before. I downloaded a bunch of WEBP images and needed to convert WEBP to JPG. Later I found that the Preview app that comes with macOS can do it. It is really super convenient! Just open the WEBP file and choose to export it as JPG. The whole process is very simple and there is no need to install other software. It perfectly solves my problem.
