How to Delete an Invisible Soundtrack in Keynote

None of the answers in the previous thread, now closed, ever acknowledged the existence of a bug that has survived to Keynote Version 14.1 (21 July 2024). The problem is that the soundtrack file is not included in the Asset list in the Asset side panel. Its "Play" action shows up under Animations in the Build Order but removing that does not remove the asset. It is present in the center panel on the media display window but is likely to occupy the lowest layer and be overlain by other assets. Remember, it's not in the Asset list and so cannot be moved in that panel to the top layer.

To remove the invisible soundtrack:

  • Save your work.
  • Select all assets in the Assets panel.
  • Right click and select "Cut".
    • This should reveal the soundtrack icon in the center panel on the media pane, since there's nothing left to overlay it.
  • Select the soundtrack icon and Delete it. Don't use Cut, because the paste buffer already contains all of your other assets.
  • In the Assets panel, Paste back the cut assets.

A note to the moderators:

Whenever you come across a thread with snide, tutorial suggestions starting with words like "Why don't you just...", it's a good indication that there's a bug that affects users who have built up complex projects but does not affect beginners or doodlers. The doodlers will see an obvious solution that the advanced users cannot.
