iMovie media turned red on edited video

Using iMovie 10.4.1

I have almost finished editing a video. I shut the project down and came back to it later only to find almost every clip in timeline is red.

I have tried restarting, option/command start and nothing seems to bring the clips back. They are showing in media for the project. Any help very welcome.

I solved the problem. It turns out the library had corrupted the video somehow, the links between the timeline and media had been broken.

To fix it I first tried adding all the clips to another video - I.e starting again. I noticed this started to add video back into the original ‘broken’ iMovie project timeline. Importing this media was taking ages though, and I think it’s because the library was damaged.

To solve I created a new library - imported the files to a new video - created a totally separate video and copied the entire timeline from the broken video to it.

This restored the video with everything intact. Hope this helps someone someday. Happy editing.
