Having trouble importing a video from a vcr tape through a camcorder into an iMac.

I have iMovie 10.1.2 I am using a canon dv camcorder to carry the video into the computer. The program recognizes the camcorder. I can upload tapes played on the camcorder. When I connect the vcr to the camcorder and try to upload to the computer it recognizes my camcorder and I can see the VCR video in iMovie. I can't get the video to import. I used to do this all the time about 10 years ago. Can anyone help?
