Cannot open old .mov files with quicktime or VLC or handbreak

I have old .mov files that do not open with quicktime. An error saying "the file isn't compatible" appears. I have also tried to open them with VLC. I have also tried to convert them with VLC. The same outcome occurs either way, the file is just the first image frozen even though the tracker at the bottom seems to move along.

I also tried converting with Handbreak and Compressor, but no luck.

These are old videos of my kids and babies and I really want to get them back, what is the best way to get them to work again?
