If you go into the About This Mac dialog in the Apple () menu, it should indicate what Mac model you have.

If your MacBook Air's model year is

  • Late 2008 or Mid 2009 – El Capitan is as far as you can go.
  • Late 2010 or Mid 2011 – High Sierra is as far as you can go
  • Mid 2012 – Catalina is as far as you can go
  • Mid 2013 or Early 2014 – Big Sur is as far as you can go

We know you don't have a 2015 or later model, since those can't run Mavericks.

Even Big Sur is no longer one of the "most recent three" that matter for vendors like Microsoft and Adobe. If you need to run the latest version of macOS – currently, Sonoma – you'll need a newer Mac. (Say, one that is on the compatibility list for Sequoia, which Apple will be releasing in a few months.)

If this Mac is still on Mavericks, it might not be able to access the Support article, due to changes in Web security. You may need to use a modern Mac or PC to download the .DMG file containing the El Capitan installer, and place the .DMG file on a USB flash drive (as a data file) for transfer to the old MacBook Air. Then you'd copy the. .DMG to the MacBook Air, open it (to mount the disk image), and run the installer application inside.

If your MacBook Air can be upgraded to High Sierra or beyond, you'll need to do that upgrade in two steps. First, upgrade to El Capitan or Sierra, so that you get versions of Safari and the App Store that are new enough to work with the Support article and its App Store links. Then upgrade to a compatible version of macOS.
