HomePod Minis won't "stick" as default audio output on MacBook Pro

I am trying to use a stereo pair of HomePod minis as the default audio output for my M1 MacBook Pro. I use the MBP as a desktop in clamshell mode. I can use the sound settings to designate the minis as my output, but if I sleep the Mac or there's a long time before audio is used, the system defaults back to the MacBook Pro's own speakers.

Is there any way to make the minis "stick" as the default audio output?

The MBP is running Sonoma 14.5, and the minis are also full7 up to date.
