A Way to Either Disable Overlapping Audio, or Move a Clip by One Frame

I use iMovie (10.3.8) for editing voiceovers because I like the UI and Apple-ness of it.

However, it makes editing the spoken word difficult because when clips snap together on the magnetic timeline, iMovie adds a strange effect that merges and overlaps the audio, making it sound like an editing error.

Currently I get around this by snapping clips together, then separating them by one frame with the mouse. This is tedious and time consuming.

Is there a way to either disable this "merge" effect, or else nudge a clip one frame to the right with the keyboard?

⌥, nudges a clip to the left, but I haven't found a way to nudge to the right.
