How to retrieve lost photos after disabling iCloud?

After I disable the iCloud Photos option in the phone setting of Photos, over half of my photos are gone in my iPhone! I used to have about 15K photos on my phone and now it only has 7K left! What happened? How can I recover that? Please help!
