Nikon Z6III RAW Support

It appears the latest versions of iPadOS and iOS do not support RAW files from the newly released Nikon Z6III; as such, I'm unable to preview any images within Lightroom or Files while connecting the SD card from this camera. Is this the case for anyone else?

One solution I have found that worked for me is to change the RAW recording setting from High efficiency* to Lossless compression. This can be done by going to the cameras menu -> camera tab -> RAW recording. Doing this has allowed me to view photos in both the Photos application as well as Affinity Photo 2. Curious if changing the above setting would work for Lightroom as well.

It's the same for everybody, and will be until raw support is added.

That said, adding raw support does not seem to be a priority these days for Apple. So, some cameras are never supported, so partially supported and some fully so.

Options: Convert the raws to DNG with Adobe's free converter.

or

Use a third party app to manage these (and if you wish) all you photos. Apps like Adobe's Lightroom and Lightroom Classic, CaptureOne, DxO Photo Lab, Mylio and others have their own raw support and tend to be faster and more complete in the support they offer, but then they ought to be as you pay for them. Also consider the software that the maker of your camera recommends, which is most likely free and there are also open source options too.

I would imagine changing the application you use would be a lot less expensive than changing your hardware.

Obviously not the day of, but take a look at the Nikon Zf: released in October 2023, and according to this link from Apple, it is still not supported on the latest iOS/iPadOS/macOS versions. The least that can be done is create a post like this to give the issue some visibility.

In regards to your last sentence, my camera purchase dictates my OS options, not the other way around. With the new video specs on the Z6III, I'm looking to upgrade my PC to render, and with the slow turnaround time as seen above with the Zf, I'm likely to look elsewhere than Apple.

As Yer_Man suggests, even though my Nikon Z8 lossless RAW files are not supported by macOS, Lightroom Classic (monthly payment) and Nikon's NX Studio (free!) read those file just fine on my Mac. I have a Z5 whose NEFs are recognized, but I don't use Photos to handle those, anyway.

The thing is, I can't see that Photos does much, if anything at all, to take advantage of RAW files. I have my camera generate both jpegs and NEFs, and I import the jpegs to Photos to help me separate out the few that are pretty good and that might benefit from RAW manipulation. Then for those I use software that can work with RAW data to get the best jpeg I can, and I import that to Photos for maybe some final adjustments and cropping, and to keep organized for my Mac and my i-things. I store all the RAW files on an external drive in case I change my mind, later.

My point is that I don't care that Photos doesn't recognize RAW, since it doesn't do anything special with it, anyway. I'm still learning about this stuff, often from folks on this forum.
