imovie ken burns effect stopped working in project

I was 3 minutes or so into a project and using Ken Burns effect of many pictures. I also have video clips, music, titles and narration in the project.

Around this point, while trying to add a Ken Burns effect to a picture, the start, finish boxes appeared but I could not manipulate either box, nor continue.

After a restart, my project will play but any attempt to add pictures and the effect had the same result.

Have you tried Luis' suggestion to disable 3 finger dragging in System Settings?

I have this issue as well and I can definitively trace it to the most recent App update (10.4.1) from June 2024. The problem started immediately after the most recent update. I have rebooted, I have deleted iMovie and reinstalled, I have deleted my entire iMovie library and THEN reinstalled the app, nothing fixes it. It is IMO absolutely an iMovie App problem, and sadly I believe we will have to wait for Apple to correct it. It is extremely frustrating.

Thanks Rich and Ian, I had already tried another new project and got the same results.

I also created another user and imported a few of my media pics and video. I opened iMovie and created a new project. I put a few pics on the timeline and tried to manipulate with Ken Burns and got the same result.

So, I'm thinking that perhaps iMovie is corrupt. I have read a bit about moving it to the trash, but not deleting it and then a new download and install of iMovie from the App Store.

If you are familiar with that procedure I would welcome advice, I've not done that before.

In any case, things are pointing that way and I need to research my next steps.

BTW, there are no "critical" projects I will loose, so a "blank slate start" might be my best option.

Yes I have tried clicking on both start box and finish and no response to that action. Strange because the mouse is not frozen, I can move it around, but both start and finish boxes won't respond or move. In fact I click anything on the program, no response. I have done many iMovies and this is new, just came out of the blue?

Thanks for your help, on to further steps with the program.

Thanks and yes I also tried the "click and drag", it gave me the same result. Very erratic, varying results on dragging and positioning.

I just created a new project with, setting enable Ken Burns for pictures with 3 sec duration. (same as my first project). Project plays with alternating zoom in and pull out effect using Ken Burns. I can change that direction with the "swap" arrows so all pictures will zoom in.

However, the moment I try to change the starting point or ending point of the zoom, effect has a mind of its own. It might respond to my moving it or not or freeze. This happens with both three finger or click and drag.

just a note: those of us who like and regularly use Three Finger Drag, do so because we generally hate click and drag... so, while it's great that click and drag works for your way of doing things, it doesn't work for everyone, including me.

also: Disabling Three Finger drag (or using a mouse) corrects the issue.

Note to Apple: we have found the source of the problem, something between iMovie and Three Finger Drag isn't working right, pls fix this. tks.
