Using Mac Pro and iMac together?

I'm considering picking up a used Mac Pro since my iMac is slow and not very upgradable, is there a way to have the "bigger" apps on the Mac Pro, and "small" stuff on the iMac? My iMac can still handle light tasks fairly well and I don't want to let it go to waste.

I think sure that will work if you want to have two computers running side by side, independently. I don't think you can somehow combine the CPUs to turn this into a super computer. Well, it may be possible but would probably be very complicated and require you know a lot about networking and run a different operating system designed for that kind of thing.
