How can I import Word documents into Keynote without losing the original formatting? Once I have, can I alter the text of the document?

Keynote is not a word processing application nor does not import Word documents. You can copy some content from the Word document and paste it into Keynote but do not expect the transferred content to look like it does in Word.
You might have better luck copying/pasting Word content into PowerPoint as Microsoft controls that ecosystem. Apple is not in the business of making Microsoft clones so the specialized formatting that MS Word uses is bound to work better in PowerPoint than Keynote. Its about the right tools for the intended result.
Thank you for your reply. The workaround I am using is to take a screenshot of the text and drop it in as an image, which has its problems. What a shame.
