Safari will load pages, but refuses to follow links

I have used Apple products for decades. I chose them because they just worked. But over the past couple of years, I'm encountering increasing issues. This is NOT what I paid more to Apple for!

My current issue is with Safari. I own a M2 Mac mini (2023) with 8GB memory running OS-X Sonoma 14.5. Standard 500Gb HDD. I'm running Safari version 17.5. I have a fast cable modem connected to my mini via Ethernet.

What is happening is that when I go to some sites (the Roon Users' Forum, for example), Safari will load the page, but does not respond to any of the hyperlinks on the page. I've tried reloading the page and it loads as usual, but the hyperlinks are still not working.

I've tried the usual stuff - delete my Safari history, dump all cookies, reboot the mini - none of this makes ANY difference. Pages still load fine; hyperlinks are still dead.

I've looked online via Google and in this forum but have found nothing helpful. One wag criticized the poster who said his Mac was doing the same thing with BOTH Safari and Chrome saying "what you've posted makes no sense." Well, I am having the very same problem and whether or not anyone else thinks it makes sense, this is what is happening.

Safari should work better than this. Since I'm obviously not the only one having this exact problem, it's past time for Apple to step in and fix the issue. I'm not a bad troubleshooter, and if this can be fixed in settings, Apple needs to post their proposed cure. If it is something that needs to be fixed in the guts of Safari, then it's even more shameful that Apple has allowed this issue to linger so long.

Apple, Apple, wherefore art thou Apple?

The page you have posted in our YouTube video has not loaded completely and there something preventing that from happening, otherwise you would see the length of the video when you hover the cursor over it before it is clicked. If you are fine with the other browsers then you can continue as you are and if you want to troubleshoot the cause of the problem, we can do that too.

First you would want to remove any of these categories of software that have shown problems before:

  • Cleaners (CleanMyMac aka BrickMyMac is the worst)
  • Optimizers
  • AntiVirus
  • VPN

Then:

  • Remove Safari Extensions at Safari > Settings > Extensions
  • Test in a Private Window
  • Make sure JavaScript is enabled at Safari > Settings > Security > Enable JavaScript
  • If using Private Relay, reload the page without it by going to Safari > View > Reload and Show IP Address

If Safari doesn't open a page or work as expected on your Mac - Apple Support

And finally, post the free EtreCheck report to see what conflicts there are on your system files. This will also show any Hangs or Crashes that may have occurred using Safari. The report contains no personal information and there is no need to make any purchase. It was developed by a fellow user on these forum to provide a snapshot of your system and is used frequently to resolve issues. Just click the Share Report button after the report is ran and copy it to the clipboard. After you return here, use the Additional Text option to paste the report.

If you are able to resolve the problem on your own, please provide what you did to help others. Not everyone is experiencing that behavior with Safari, so there must be something in common that would be appreciated by those users.

I just opened the Roon User's Forum and links worked fine, so it doesn't seem to be a universal problem. Then I went to Ask Different, the Stack Exchange forum for Apple users (I'm wary of posting links here as they get edited out sometimes), and saw some entries that might relate. You could try searching or registering and asking on that site - it's a place I've gone for questions that don't get answered here.

I should add that I've noticed some odd things happening with Safari on Mac. For example, the Google Translate page would only show the first column of languages. The other columns were there but not showing, as I could click in the apparently empty space and a new language would show up in the input space. If I wanted to use Google Translate, I would go to Firefox. That problem in Safari went away after a while.

But, as Mac Jim ID points out, other browsers have problems, too. This may just be a consequence of the "world wide web" becoming more complicated. Webpage formatting languages multiply and become more elaborate, web designers are trying to accomplish new and different things; meanwhile, browser developers have to keep up with other concerns, such as security. I guess I've gotten used to having a second browser on hand when Safari isn't behaving.
