There is no way to tell which is the new Card and which is the old Card.
I’ve found scratches on both the new and old chip strips… Only trial and error could tell then.
Trial and error. If your old one had any use on it, then you may see some wear on the stripe. Other than that, you are correct and they are identical. Since the iPhone XR and later can activate the card by tapping it, you would think that you could identify it the same way. Feedback may be the best option as users are just now receiving there cards, since the first batch is coming up on the expiration date, and this may well be a problem for others too.
Please look at the chip on the card for horizontal line (i.e., sign of wear and tear). The first picture is old card and the second picture is new card) Thanks!
