How to Change/update my Password with stolen device protection turned on?

I was notified by Apple that my password needed updating because it was 'leaked'. So I proceed to go to appleid.apple.com to change it. Only to be given a window that said this: Because Stolen Device Protection is turned on, some of your account information can’t be changed on the web. To change your password, use your other Apple devices.

It also listed other devices to do this on. The problem is that one of the devices it said to do it on was actually the mac mini that I used to begin with.

I also tried doing it on my iPhone 15pro (also listed) but it just takes me to the same appleid.apple.com and I have the same problem. I also checked on the settings and I don't have stolen device protection on my iPhone 15pro.

Can someone please help me on what I need to do to update this password???

Thanks!

Thanks for that information. SO, basically I have to wait an hour and try again? Do I just leave the window open that I have in appleid.apple.com? Or after an hour I just go to appleid.apple.com and try again. See, the apple ID that I need to change is the one for purchases etc. iTunes, etc. I have a separate one for my purchases than I have for my Mac devices...your instructions are for what I have on my devices. It's the hour wait thing I didn't understand I guess. I'm also not sure how stolen device protection got turned on...it's not turned on with my iPhone 15pro...

If possible, I’d highly recommend just using one Apple ID and having everything linked to that one Apple ID.

Basically how Stolen Device Protection works is by setting a one hour timer for any major changes that are made on your device. This setting can be toggled on/off, but was made in response to reports about devices being stolen when unlocked and the owner being locked out of their account. This one hour timer allows the legitimate owner time to lock down the device.

Based on the error you provided;

Because Stolen Device Protection is turned on, some of your account information can’t be changed on the web. To change your password, use your other Apple devices.

I would try changing your password on device and not through https://appleid.apple.com/. Take one of your Apple devices that is logged into the Apple ID that needs its password changed and follow the above steps. They should be the same regardless of what Apple device you’re using.

Hello highpoint7,

To change your Apple ID password with iPhone, please follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Your Name (Apple ID).
  3. Tap Sign-In & Security.
  4. Tap Change Password.

If you have Stolen Device Protection on, you will need to wait an hour before you can actually change the password. If you want to learn more about Stolen Device Protection - About Stolen Device Protection for iPhone - Apple Support.

I hope this helps!
