Change the order of albums in iTunes?

How do I manually rearrange the order of albums in iTunes? Here is an example of a problem I encountered: Although I have it set to order the albums by YEAR, A band released two albums BOTH in 2016. The FIRST one released starts with the letter "W", and the SECOND one starts with the letter "B". They are both labeled in iTunes as being released in 2016, but it orders those two 2016 albums in ALPHABETICAL order, so it puts the SECOND album ("B") BEFORE the FIRST album ("W"). Can I change the order manually? (in this example, to have the albums in the actual release order, despite being released in the same year)

No, you cannot in general set a manual order within the body of the library. You can do so in a playlist using the Play Order sort.

You could potentially change the Sort Album values for the two albums to something like:

  • 2016.1 W{rest of album title}
  • 2016.2 B{rest of album title}

which should give the desired order in Album by Artist/Year sorting, but would result in a somewhat odd order when sorting by Album in some other view.

Or if there are no album releases by the same band in 2015 or 2017 you could put the wrong Year value in to drive the desired sort order, and note the correct date either in comments, or perhaps as a suffix to the album title.
