quicktime record screen controller disappear and I can not stop the recording

QuickTime record (video) screen controller tool disappears, and I can not stop the recording.

I tried quitting the app, but then I did not have the video I attempted to record. I must be able to make a screen video to show some functions that are not working on my website, so a screenshot will not work as well.

Someone answered a similar question and wrote there was another way to take a video of the screen, but his screenshot was empty.
