iOS 17 mail “complete threads” bug

iOS 17.x hosts a most annoying (and likely very uncommon) “feature” on my phone. “Complete threads” is always active whether the mail settings toggle is enabled or not.

I’ve always kept multiple mailboxes/accounts - for “reasons” (nothing exciting, bills/reminders across non-Apple devices mostly).

“Complete threads” allows the mail client to peek inside other mailboxes and show/mark/delete messages as one, regardless which account they live in. Exactly what I don’t want from the “multiple accounts” strategy. I have always immediately turned “complete threads” off. Well, since 17.x (recently), regardless the toggle, “complete” is doing its joyful thing. Delete a message in one account and it’s gone everywhere. Read a message intentionally left as UNREAD in one account and it’s marked read everywhere.

I have toggled settings, quit app, rebooted, reinstalled app, etc. all with no joy. This is annoying!

Next alternative is to find a less buggy mail client.

Thank you for the replies and the very very detailed description of the Apple documentation. As you pointed out, “complete threads” will act on messages ”even if emails arrived out of order or were in different mailboxes.”

It is this “were in different mailboxes” that is causing problems. Even with “complete threads” disabled, the mail client is acting on a message in all mailboxes, not just the currently selected message in the current mailbox.

iPhone 12 Pro. iOS 17.4.1, though this may have begun with 17.4.0.

I have been an iPhone/iOS user for over 15 years. I will attempt a more concise description and file a bug. Thank you.

iPhone SE / 17.4.1 and iPad Pro (12.9-inch) (5th generation) / IpadOS 17.4.1

On both the iPad and iPhone I’m managing multiple gmail accounts using the native apple email client on each device.

I have the same issue which has recently occurred past 2 weeks(?) or so - and despite toggling off the “complete threads” button, the same email is being deleted across all my gmail inboxes.

Interestingly, if I access the gmail via a web browser I don’t have a problem - it only happens when managing emails using iOS.

I would appreciate any guidance anyone can share ?

You may get better and prompt responses if you may kindly provide the iPhone Model that you have and the iOS version if it is known to you and re-post.

With the limited information that you have provided, It is hard to even guess the problems faced by you.

In the iOS Mail app, the "Complete Thread" option allows you to mark an entire email thread as read or unread, archive it, or delete it. When you use this feature, it affects all the emails within that thread, not just the individual email you're currently viewing. It's handy for managing clutter in your inbox and keeping it organized.

The "Complete Thread" setting in the iPhone Mail app works alongside "Organize by Thread" to manage how you view email conversations.

Here's a breakdown:

  • Organize by Thread (On by Default): This groups all replies to an original email together, keeping the conversation history in one place.
  • Complete Threads (Optional): When enabled, this setting searches for older related messages and adds them to the existing thread. This ensures you have the entire conversation history, even if emails arrived out of order or were in different mailboxes.

For instance, imagine an email exchange about a project that started last month. With "Complete Threads" on, the Mail app will try to find previous emails about that project and include them in the current thread, even if they were filed away in a different folder.

Here are some additional points to consider:

  • Disabling "Complete Threads" won't affect existing threads. It just stops the Mail app from searching for older emails to add to new threads.
  • You can enable/disable "Complete Threads" in the iPhone Settings app under "Mail" > "Threading".
  • Some users prefer to keep "Complete Threads" off for better organization, especially if they use folders extensively.

Ultimately, it depends on your preference and how you manage your emails.
