Since i couldn't reply to same question somewhere else i am posting the question as well as the answer here.
To remove the Google Chrome drive icon from desktop, which shows after you download google chrome app on mac, go to finder, General settings and uncheck "External disks" under "show these items on the desktop:" and the google disk icon will disappear from the desktop.
Hope this helps future users new to apple/mac.

Yes, the "drive icon" is the .dmg file. It's the file you download when you want to install a program. Once you've installed the program, you drag it to the trash.
If you turn "External Files" on again, you will likely see it still sitting there.

It sounds as if you may be talking about a .dmg file. When you turn off External Disks, you don't delete it; you just hide it.
Drag it to the trash.
