Why is this update of iOS 17.4.1 taking up so much space?

once I updated my phone with 17.4.1 I keep getting a storage full message and I had room on my phone. Now, everything I do is blocked with storage full messaging.

iPhone XR, iOS 14

Then you have an iPhone which doesn't meet your storage needs. Typically to do an update, you need about 10GB of free space on your phone. If you are that low in memory, you need a phone with more memory. The least amount of memory Apple includes on a new iPhone these days is 128GB.

You can use a computer with iTunes (Windows) or Finder (Mac) to do the update, which may be your only option if you don't want to delete things from your iPhone, such as apps, music, photos, email, messages, files, etc.

Me too! This update has destroyed my phone. I have 11xr and did the 17.5.1
and the system data is taking up 28.3and iOS is taking up 10.32 GB!
this is about HALF of my storage.
I spent a day unloading photos and videos etc and to find I had less space availble?!

Back the phone up.

Erase all content & Settings

Restore from backup

That will reset System Data to a minimum
