AirTag firmware not updating

I have purchased pack of four new AirTags. Surprisingly, the firmware was old - version 1.0.291.

The AirTags are not updating the firmware, despite being close to the iPhone 15 Pro for weeks.

Yes, I have tried resetting the AirTags, restarting the iPhone. Apple states that firmware updates periodically, however, that does not seem to be the case here, unless periodically means more than few weeks.

At what stage do I take them back to an Apple Store under warranty as a faulty product?

Hmm. Apple hasn't provided an AirTag firmware update since last year (2023) with the release of 2.0.61. I'm going by this support article, which also doesn't list the version you say your tags are: 1.0.291.

Regardless, Apple has AFAIK never described what "periodic" updates actually mean, so they can mean daily, weekly, monthly, or longer.

Whether or not yours are faulty would require an Apple Technician to concur with that finding. If you want to pursue that route, you will need to have them examined by Apple.
