MacBook stuck in loop

MBP late 2013 model just stopped working one night. Everything was taking 15min to load. I was suggested to replace the battery & before doing this I tried reinstalling Big Sur. That didn’t work because I don’t think I had the space. Fine. But somewhere along the way, I hit something I shouldn’t have & suddenly was stuck in a loop of Startup Disk window with the only option going into Target disc mode which does nothing. I ended up completely wiping my MacHD in Utilities in recovery mode & it still won’t install the OS cause it just keeps getting stuck at “less than a minute remaining”. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to reboot this computer in different ways, but I don’t get any other option & I couldn’t even get back to the log in screen before wiping the HD. I have no clue of any other option at this point. Genius Bar is a good distance from me. What else can I do. (I don’t have Apple care)

That "less than a minute remaining", or "5 minutes remaining" is often a complete fib. Not sure why Apple does it. When updating my 2013 MBP, I often had to wait for an hour or so at "less than a minute" or whatever before the update completed, or moved on to the next step.

Also, the battery doesn't have anything to do with how long loading or any other process takes. It just affects how long the computer can run without being plugged in. Though replacing it might be a good idea in itself, depending on your battery.
