Cant import I phone video files into I movie

I have a 2016 macbook with high sierra, and im unable to import .mov video files which should be supported by I movie into I movie, ive tried converting into mp4 but this doesn't work either just comes up with a white crossed out circle.

All videos recorded on an iphone 12. Do I need to update my OS/I movie? (also supports photos from the same phone and some videos from a while back oddly)

If your videos are stored in the Photos app, do a File/Export of the video to your desktop, and from there drag it into the timeline if an iMovie project.

If still no luck importing your videos, try deleting/resetting preferences. To delete/reset preferences open iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and select to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new empty library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. Possibly you may need to reboot to set the changes.  Now see if you can import your videos. Deleting preferences is a

safe procedure that will not cause data loss or disruption to your project.
