iMovie heating up MacBook and using a lot of RAM, despite being new

I recently purchased and started using a new 14-inch MacBook Pro. Recently, when I exported a movie file from the app, the Mac heated up a lot, and seemed to heat up more than when I exported movies and videos from iMovie on my old Mac from 2016/2017. The export on the new Mac was also slow and took up 13GB of the 16GB of RAM, and I feel like it was connected to the heat issue. Is there something I can do, download, etc. to mitigate this issue on the Mac? What should I do?

Overheating can happen if your Mac is not located where it gets proper air circulation, or if the fan is not functioning, or if the movie that is being processed is large or has complex editing., or if there are other CPU intensive processes that are going on at the same time.

If your Mac has an M1 or later silicon chip, try shutting down your computer, closing the lid, waiting 30 seconds, and then rebooting. That should adjust any hardware issues that might be causing the problem.
