iPad Battery Drain and Overheating Issue Post iOS 17.4

After updating to iOS 17.4, I've been unable to use my 3rd generation iPad Pro 11. It's experiencing massive battery drain (at a rate of 1 percentage point per minute!) and overheats significantly. I haven't even been able to complete a full battery charge because it pauses due to high-temperature alerts. I contacted Apple support, but they didn't resolve the issue. They simply sent me an article with recommendations such as not using apps in the background or trying to charge it with a different charger/plug. I don't use the iPad intensively; it's just a reading and work tool for making annotations and occasionally watching videos on YouTube. I've tried changing plugs, chargers, resetting the device, and nothing works. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Do I have to keep my iPad unusable until a new update comes out? How can Apple allow this?

I have an 2nd generation iPad Pro 11 and have had the same exact issue since 17.4… rapid battery drain, and can’t charge while using the ipad without overheating. I’ve double checked background apps and all the usual suspects. Sometimes, the only app I have open/using is Safari, though more often than not, it’s YouTube. This was a very abrupt issue since 17.4. I’m reluctant to contact support and waste my time with the usual support runaround of reset/reboot/check apps. But, yes, same problem here with a slightly older ipad model.

Exactly the same here, after 17.4. I have never experienced problems before, and now the iPad (pro 11) overheats whist not in use, and the battery goes flat in about 2-3 hours. It seems to be okay when I’m using it, but when I close the keyboard (apple keyboard) it starts to overheat.

Remove the iPad from the Magic Keyboard - and carefully/gently clean the smart connector contacts on both the iPad and keyboard with a soft pencil eraser (a drafting-film eraser is ideal). Ensure that the contacts on both iPad and keyboard are dry, dirt and dust free - and all debris from the eraser have been removed - before reconnecting the two.

If the problem persists, disconnect the iPad from the keyboard. Does the iPad now perform as expected without heating? If so, your Keyboard (or possibly the iPad) has a fault.

You would be best advised to visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess both your iPad and Keyboard - and you can explore your available options for remedy:
