iPhone stuck on recovery screen after trying to update to iOS 17.4

So I’ve been trying to install 17.4 OTA on my iPhone 12 Pro Max but it failed multiple times, I went to upgrade on Mac and now iPhone is stuck on recovery screen so I decided to try the restore, guess what, not working either.

this is the error message I get :

The iPhone could not be restored, An unknown error occurred (-1). 06A6.FFFF

I have searched this community and found many users with this same issue, this is a software issue not a hardware one, what is going on with Apple updates these days !?

interesting, what attempted to test was their self diagnostic guide to see if there’s a hardware problem but device couldn’t even enter diagnostic mode.

Since 3uTools is not available for Mac, i got the firmware from IPSWdotMe, i kept restoring many times in Finder until it worked.

I wonder if there’s an official apple website for firmwares in case we needed to download them manually.

The error code "-1)06A6.FFF" indicates an issue during the restore process on your iPhone 12 Pro Max but there are a few steps you can try to resolve the problem:

  1. Ensure that you are using the latest version of iTunes on your PC or Finder (macOS) on your Mac. Outdated software may not support the latest iOS updates.
  2. Use the original Apple USB cable that came with your iPhone or a certified third-party cable. Sometimes, faulty cables can cause connection issues.
  3. Attempt the restore process on a different computer to rule out any computer-specific issues.
  4. Disable any security software (firewall, antivirus) temporarily during the restore process, as they might interfere with the connection.
  5. Consider visiting an Apple Authorized Service Provider if the Apple Store was unable to resolve the issue. They may have additional resources and tools to help.
  6. Still not solved --> Force restart iPhone - Apple Support

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it is recommended to reach out to Apple Support or visit an authorized service center for further assistance. They can provide specific guidance based on your device model and iOS version.

iPhone stuck on recovery screen after trying to update to iOS 17.4

You don’t need a selection of cables, if your cable is working and you have latest iTunes on your pc you’re good to go.

just download the 17.3.1 firmware from IPSW.me, open iTunes or other Apple device App, plug your device, while holding shift on your keyboard click restore then select the downloaded firmware, if you get the same error, keep repeating until it work.

I have both of those things and once the download was complete... nothing same issue. I am currently downloading from IPSW.me. Can i ask why 17.3.1 as there are now newer versions?

Previous posts did specify try a different cable or a different PC My comment was in response to those posts

This is not one of those usual problems, I triple checked everything, heck i even tried restoring thru Apple Configurator and it’s same, something is wrong with iOS 17.4, I was also going to update to iPadOS 17.4 but I am glad I didn’t, I’ve seen others getting same error code on it. Will probably wait for 17.5 or 17.4.1.

3uTools is the one I used, I made sure to get the 17.3.1 firmware for the correct device, and then had it flashed in the (Smart Flash tab or when pressing flash from the Device tab when device in recovery) easy flash - Quick Flash Mode. Yeah it does wipe the device, but I had already expected that the data would be loss except what was already backed up.

The backup mostly recovered everything on my end after getting my iPad to work again.

I don't think it's related but I did also do an experiment to see if freezing the iPad in the freezer for an hour would help in an earlier attempt to try to restore from iTunes, didn't seem to have any impact.
