Anyone have any luck digitizing DV tapes from a SONY GVHD7001 deck to an
iMac 24-inch, M1, 2021? I used to be able to do this on a PowerMac G4
and Mac Pro2 running Snow Leopard albeit hit or miss trying to get it to
work.

You might review page 59 of the Sony deck's owner's manual to make sure that you have followed the exact procedures that are required. I saw the following note that possibly might be applicable to your case.

P.S. I'm using the SONY i.LINK output with a Tera Grand Firewire 800 9-Pin to
Firewire 400 4-Pin Cable inputted to a Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to
Thunderbolt 2 Adapter and Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter. This
works with my SONY DV Video camera but not the SONY GVHD7001 deck, which
has more useful functions than the camera.
P.P.S.:
As I recall when I used this on Snow Leopard I used a Kramer PT-1FW DV Line Protector. Is
there someway I could incorporate this into the chain for the iMac?
P.P.S. Would a CalDigit Thunderbolt 4 Element Hub solve the problem?
Yep, that was the “finicky” part when it worked on “Snow Leopard”. I think it has something to do with power consumption because the fire wire adapter gets warm to the touch.
