Can you use Apple Watch (GPS only) to send and receive without wifi?

Thinking of buying an Apple Watch to go with my iPhone 14 and AirPods but not sure whether to get GPS only or GPS + cellular. I know GPS only can still send and receive but everywhere I look says you need Bluetooth AND WiFi with your iPhone to do it. I was wondering if you can still send and receive with with just Bluetooth only for when I’m outside the house with no WiFi. Is this possible or do you always need both WiFi and Bluetooth to send and receive on GPS only? Thanks.

The GPS Only models can do EVERYTHING the cellular models can do AS LONG AS the iPhone is nearby. Where nearby is generally both are in the same moderate sized wood frame constructed home.

Or when the iPhone is in your pocket, purse, in your hand, on a car mount with you in the car, etc... Near you.

When the iPhone is nearby generally the Apple Watch will use low power Bluetooth to take advantage of the iPhone's radios.

If the iPhone and the Apple Watch are on the same WiFi network then the Apple Watch will talk to the iPhone over WiFi.

If the iPhone is not on the same network, then there are restrictions on what the Apple Watch can do

And in reality how often are you in a location with WiFi service with just your Apple Watch, and not your iPhone?

Or to put it another way. If you intentionally plan on leaving your iPhone at home when you leave the house, then assume your Apple Watch will tell the time, and internally keep track of your exercise, but it will rare give you the current temperature and weather, nor make and receive phone calls, nor send or receive TEXT/MMS and iMessages, etc... except when you get to some destination that allows your Apple Watch to join WiFi.

On the other hand, if basically your iPhone is glued to your person anytime you leave the house, then the GPS Only Apple Watch will do EVERYTHING the cellular model will do, but cost less, and not have any monthly charges.

I own a Series 4 GPS Only Apple Watch (I'm into my 6th year), and it has been perfect for my needs, as I do not leave the house without my iPhone, and while in the house, my iPhone is generally with me, but if it is say sitting on a charger, the Bluetooth range is good enough that my Apple Watch can still see and talk to the iPhone.

Things I do with my GPS Only Series 4 Apple Watch:

• It tells time, date, day of the week

• Every iPhone alarm, appears on my wrist, where you can acknowledge it, dismiss it, etc…

• I like the iPhone 3rd party “Alarmed” app (http://yoctoville.com), for my alarms

• Ring.com door bell can display a static image on the Apple Watch

• Weather (this gets used a lot)

• MyRadar 3rd party app will display radar image

• MyRadar and WeatherBug 3rd party apps will send you weather alerts

• Make/Receive phone calls

• Make/Receive FaceTime audio calls

• Use Walkie-Talkie anywhere on the planet

• Silence phone ringing by pressing the digital crown (great for SPAM calls)

• Send & receive iMessages

• Send & receive SMS TEXT

• Say “Hey Siri, 14 and a half minute timer”

• Say “Hey Siri, remind me when I get home to do xyz”

• Say “Hey Siri, message my wife/husband/Susan/George/etc…”

• Say “Hey Siri, start Outdoor Walk”

• Say “Hey Siri, end workout”

• Use a 3rd party garage door opener app and device (such as MyQ)

• You can check your calendar

• If you need to take an iPhone picture where you cannot see the screen, use Apple Watch Camera app as a view finder/shutter release

• 3rd party Ocean's Tide app for beach visits

• Hand washing reminder and timer

• Unlock your Mac (I do this several times a day)

• Unlock your iPhone when you are wearing a mask

• Track your exercise and physical activities

Since my Wife got her Apple Watch, we have been able to reliably iMessage each other, as she never keeps here iPhone on her person.

If my Apple Watch was lost, stolen, or broken, I would order a replacement as fast as possible, as I would miss it so much.
