Years ago I used a earlier version of iMovie to edit some home movies and burn them to DVDs. With the current version, I can't figure out how to save the edited iMovie file (to Movies in iTunes?) and burn it to DVD. I have Toast that I purchased for this purpose and can make a DVD with the unedited clips, but not the iMovie edited version. The edited clips are in the "Timeline".

To save/export the edited iMovie file ( "from the timeline") go up to top of screen and click on FILE>SHARE> FILE.
In the pop up menu select quality to HIGH and then after selecting NEXT save to your desktop.
From your desktop bring this file into Toast.
If your version of Toast enables you to " Save as a Disc image" instead of burning your movie to a physical DVD then this would enable you to view your "DVD" from your application called DVD Player .
This would enable you to experiment with producing "DVDs" from Toast until you get the hang of it, rather than spoiling /wasting DVD discs .DVD player will play your disc image in the same way that it would play a DVD.

When I do this I get a "Converting" window with a progress bar similar to what happened when I opened these old iMovie files after many years. Converting from 32bit to 64 I guess. But I quickly got an overlapping window saying "QuickTime Player can't open (the file)". The "Show Activity" button at the top right of the iMovie window indicates that exporting and writing are happening, but at a very slow pace. Do I just wait it out?
Yes, and a "Quick Time can't read this..." window. But they eventually went away, and several hours later, the process was complete. Should it take this long? The movie runs a little over 2 hours; I need to cut it some more.
To create a disk image you will have to click on something like this, depending on your version.
The basic procedure is to export your movie file to your desktop and from there drag it into Toast (or follow whatever procedures that the Toast app requires for importing a movie into it).

Are you saying that when you perform FILE>SHARE>FILE in iMovie you get a "Converting" window?
