Instead of giving me a full stop I get a hyphen before the full stop and have no clue how this happened or how to remove it-. it is the only key which does this -. Please HELP-.

Do you have the period key set to insert the hyphen and period characters in Text Replacements?

To test that quickly, clear the Text Replacement checkbox:
… Edit > Substitutions > Show Substitutions > uncheck the Text Replacement checkbox
