Follow the steps in the support document you posted from. It explains exactly how to update. The update will not erase anything on the iPad and you do not need to restore to factory settings to do so.

The Software Update feature on the iPad should offer the most current iOS version it can run unless its already running it.

If you are having some other issue, that requires you to restore it to factory condition because you cannot access the iPad then explain what that is.

I do have access to the ipad. The thing is it told me to connect to iTunes to update software and when i do there is an option that says restore to factory settings and update software. When i click on that it says file will be erased on iPad, settings will be reset to factory settings and recent software will be updated . There are no other options on iTunes app. Can you walk me through all the steps to update software without having to reset settings while iPad is connected to iTunes on Pc?
