MacBook Air - how to allow external USB mouse

I used an external keyboard and mouse (not Magic items) with my MacBook Pro, and now wanted to do the same with my MacBook Air (M2). Sometimes they work with the Air, sometimes a window pops up re using mouse. Where in the Air controls can I permit use of the external (USB) mouse and keyboard?

Allow accessories to connect to Mac - Apple Support

"If you have a Mac laptop with Apple silicon, you have to approve new USB or Thunderbolt devices and SD cards that you connect to your Mac. If you choose Allow, the accessory allows both power and data transmission. If you choose Don’t Allow, the accessory can still charge, but no data is transmitted."

Sounds like a feature that a corporate IT department would love. There is (according to the article) a way to disable it.
