My Apple Watch loses playlist/song when paused with AirPods

Start music playlist on iWatch, listening on AirPods Pro.

Start workout

at any point, pause music with AirPods (click)

after about 5 min, click AirPods to start music

Nothing happens, get annoyed, stop workout, switch to music app, see spinning indicator that music is not working.

How does the iWatch forget what song it's playing, or playlist it's using?

Same issue on other Bluetooth devices like 3rd party speakers. Did not used to function this way. After quick pause to do something else, come back to music app only to see Listen Now playlist (instead of the one I was just using). Now I have several taps to get back to where I was. :(
