I'm trying to open imovie and I get the message, "This graphics configuration does not support hardware acceleration, which is required to run iMovie."

Your graphics card needs to support Metal (accelerated graphics) in order to support certain applications. You can probably upgrade your card. Take a look at this artical.

You can check to see if your graphics card supports metal. Click on Apple Logo/About this Mac/Overwiew/System report/Graphics Displays and then click on your graphics card.

Without further information it sounds as though your computer is not advanced enough to support that version of iMove.
You probably need an earlier version.
If you go to your purchases page in the AppStore you should be able to download the latest compatible version for your MBA.
