Failed to allocate free space to a partition after deleting bootcamp partition on MacBook Air

I used bootcamp to remove a partition but once removed I'm left with around 40GB free space.

When I click partition in Disk Utility, I see 40.8GB of free space. If I click '-' to remove and merge it with container disk1 I get this error:

Running operation 1 of 1: Remove “Free space” and grow container disk1 “Macintosh HD”

Operation failed because corruption was found in the startup container disk1 or one of its volumes. Run First Aid from Recovery to repair it, then try again. Click Done to continue.

MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2015)

running Monterey 12.6.8

What do I do next?
