When I think of the absolute basic fundamentals of the iPhone I think of iMessage, FaceTime, Phone, Camera, and Photos. These are going to be the core applications you use for staying in touch and capturing memories. Know how to take a photo, turn on and off flash, and crop or edit the image later.

If you're completely unfamiliar with using an iPhone, the Tips app will cover the basics of navigating and using different features. The Support app, which can be downloaded from the App Store will have short-form video tutorials if you want to know how to accomplish a specific task. If you feel comfortable navigating and operating the device I would recommend slowly going through the Settings app and reading through what you can change for different apps. Accessibility has some really good interface options like increasing font size, or having Siri read your notifications to you.

One niche feature that could be very helpful for older folks is the Medical Records section of the Health app. You're able to search if your healthcare facilities are available to link with the app, and if they are, very easily download and securely store all of your medical records on your device.

Enjoy your new iPhone!
