error 400 attempting to add gmail to mac

Google error message when attempting to add Gmail account to Mail:

400. That’s an error.

The server cannot process the request because it is malformed. It should not be retried. That’s all we know.

Are there known workarounds on Sonoma OS 14.3 ?

My issue was that I continued to get the 400 error when trying to add the gmail account to the Mail app. I contacted Apple support and did the following:

  • Safari Settings > Privacy - uncheck "Prevent cross-site tracking" and "Hide IP address from tracker"
  • System Settings > Desktop and Dock - set the default browser to Google Chrome

I was then able to add the gmail account without error.

Don't forget to go back into both settings and set them back as to how they were previously!
