An Update would be updating OS X 10.11 to say OS X 10.11.6
An upGrade would be moving from OSX 10.11 to macOS 14.3 the latest version of Sonoma

If there is Third Party Security Software installed - remove it.
It will interfere with both the download and installation process.

Done it! Closed down the Mac, unplugged it, waited a minute then plugged it back in, switched on and when I started up the Mac I was able to download the update.
I too am having the same issue trying to download Sonoma 14.3.1. I am not very tech savvy. Any assistance is appreciated. This is a 2018 MacBook Pro 2.3 GHz Quad-Core Intel 8gb 2133 MHz currently running Sonoma 14.1.2,
The version I'm having difficulty with is OS Sonoma 14.3
I also have the same problem with Sonoma 14.3.1. Enough storage space and no other issue. The download was stuck at the beginning and keeps no change for 1-2 days.
same. are you still having issues?
Although your Mac's issue may seem similar to that of the OP's, its solution may be completely different. I encourage you to start a new post so that it gets the attention it deserves.
Me too! Annoying
Try booting up your Mac in Safe Mode, and then, try updating it again.
