The “Default Font” in the Mail app while composing an email is not available in the list of fonts.

On iPad, using Apple’s built-in Mail app.

  1. Typed half of an email.
  2. Copy pasted some text from any other app into the email
  3. Found out that the pasted text has a different font than the rest of the email, which uses whatever default font the Mail app uses, selected my typed in text to find the font name, only to find out that the font is called “Default Font” in the font dropdown list. This is a poor choice of name because it is not explicitly tell your customers what the actual font name is, it is very frustrating.
  4. Want to change the pasted text font to match this “Default Font”, however there is no way to find out which actual font to choose from the font list because Mail app masked the actual font name.

How can you help your customers to change the pasted in text font to match the “Default Font” in the mail App? What is the font of the Mail app’s “Default Font”??

Excellent question. I JUST experienced this exact scenario and began searching for an answer. Apple, please answer this and PLEASE use something other than “ default font” to label the font if you aren’t going to allow us to use the mysterious “default font” to make our correspondence uniform. Thanks.

I’ve got the exact same request! Thanks for taking the time to describe it so well.

I read on a forum that the “Default font” of Apple is strongly inspired from Helvetica Neue. After copy-pasting I thus usually change the font of the pasted text into Helvetica Neue and it doesn’t look too different from Default font. At least it’s better than doing nothing at all and my email looks ugly with many fonts in it.
