iBook activity LED flashes

I have just acquired a very old iBook G3 FireWire/USB (M6411). It started first time when I powered it up. However, I then updated the clock and added a user. Then I restarted it and now it won’t boot.

I get 3 chimes and then 1 long flash of the LED followed by 3 short flashes.

I cannot find details of how to diagnose these flashes online. Does anyone know what they mean?

Not sure about the LED signal, but:

I get 3 chimes...

can be a RAM issue. Has RAM been added? Have you verified any added RAM is fully seated? When in doubt I always pull the module(s) clean its slot and contacts, then reinstall, verifying full seating.

You should have 64MB RAM built-in so, if the expansion slot has a module in it, remove that and test with the built-in RAM only. I believe you need to eliminate that as a suspect before further troubleshooting.

The good news is the the old PowerPC MAcs were less finicky about RAM the the later Intel-powered models. Still if RAM has been added, make sure it meets specs: PC66 3.3V 144-pin SO-DIMM 10ns.
