Google Chrome Crashing (Spinning Beach Ball) on MacBook Pro M1 Pro 14

Google Chrome is crashing on me every time I launch it, within 5-10 seconds I am faced with the dreaded spinning beach ball. I am using a 14-inch 2021 MacBook Pro, with the M1 Pro chip and 16GB of RAM - so I should not be seeing these types of issues. I need to use Chrome for work purposes, as I need to use some particular extensions that are not available on Safari. I have tried everything I can think of in terms of troubleshooting (i.e., uninstalling and reinstalling, clearing app data and cache, using CleanMyMac X to check for any malware, etc.).

I have been using Chrome for years, with zero issues. Can anyone help?

It would be really nice if Google and Apple resolved this - my Mac crashes while using Chrome on a daily basis -- and it is ONLY when I am using Chrome.

Google has so many memory links in their crappy browser -- and they shuld spend time working on their plumbing apps eg chrome, mail, and open tools versus GenAI ... both Apple and Google should be embarassed be how crappy Chrome runs on the Mac. DO SOMETHING!!

Do you recommend that I remove CleanMyMac? I mainly use it for anti-virus and malware scanning, plus their built-in app removal tool and app updater tool are convenient. I have used it for years, with no harm caused to any of my Macs. Also, every other app on my Mac works perfectly fine except for Google Chrome.

Are you suggesting that CleanMyMac has removed needed background files for Google Chrome to function properly? Perhaps during a recent cache flush I’ve ran (naively)? Please let me know what you think.

Hi Yunruya_,

Yes, after a fresh restore on my MacBook Pro and a clean install of MacOS Sonoma, my Mac runs perfectly now. Take John Galt's advice, do not use CleanMyMac X or anything like it, ever.

I will also add that Chrome was still crashing even after my restore, but I noticed that it was due to the 'Dark Reader' extension, so I removed that and also signed out of my Google account and signed back in. That seems to have fixed the issue for me.

Let me know how you get on.

Apple and Google are separate companies with completely separate (practically divergent) business models. If you are experiencing problems with a Google product such as Chrome, contact Google for assistance. I'm sure they will be happy to help.

Apple doesn't care about Google, and Google doesn't care about Apple. Google just wants to harvest your personal information so they can develop a digital model of you, and sell it. Apple doesn't do that. In fact they go to great lengths to protect your personal information. Of course you can voluntarily surrender that protection, by installing Google. Doing so obviates most of the advantages of having a Mac.

To put it another way, Google is selling you. How much are you getting from that arrangement?
