How do you set the default contact phone number in iOS 17?

Several of my business contacts have multiple phone numbers but my iPhone 13 (iOS 17.2.1) won't let me designate primary/default numbers for calling or texting.

making a default phone number? In my contacts list, I have several phone numbers for a client. How do I establish one of them as the default phone number? Same question since this started in iOS v17 for me.

Simply delete the contact's ph numbers that are above the one you want to be default.

Then add those deleted numbers below the new default number.
